Group Leaders and Committee members should check the content of their pages and report updates to the Web Master.
We are a friendly U3A group of about 240 members that meet in Maldon, Essex, UK. We hold a regular monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at the West Maldon Community Centre, usually with a guest speaker. Throughout each month, there is a lively programme of meetings, activities and visits coordinated by over thirty different interest groups. Any member can start a new interest group, so it's a great place to share your knowledge and experience with others.
Our U3A was formed in 2004, and is one of four groups in the Maldon area. Maldon U3A instigated the opening of the Blackwater U3A, and then, in turn, we kick-started both the Heybridge U3A in 2009 and the Limebrook U3A in 2011. These local developments reflect the growth of U3A groups nationally.
Our AGM is held during the March meeting. Following the presentation of annual reports from the Chairman and Treasurer, new Committee members are elected. It is a well-established principle that committee members will normally serve for no more than three years; this helps to ensure that the committee remains enthusiastic and innovative.
Without volunteers to undertake planning and regular committee work, our U3A will grind to a halt.
We are a registered charity - Registration Number: 1113334
Our next AGM will be held during the forthcoming March 2017 meeting.
Our Constitution states that committee members serve for 3 years, after which they must stand for re-election. Officers (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer) must seek re-election every year and the Chairman and Vice Chairman must stand down after 3 years.
Our Chairman Peter Holmes will be standing down at the AGM. As will Gill West, our Social Secretary and our Vice Chairman Angie Newman.
We have three vacancies on the committee so, if any member feels they can help guide the Blackwater through the next few years, please speak to any committee member. Here is a Nomination Form which may be used to nominate another member. Without volunteers to undertake planning and regular committee work, our U3A will grind to a halt.
At the AGM we will vote on a proposal to change to the Constitution to allow us to co-opt up to 4 members to the committee. The idea is to allow people to “shadow” existing committee members so they can get a feel for the job.
There is a formal notice of the AGM in the February newsletter. During this meeting, we will be having one of our ‘Our U3A’ events where the Interest Groups put on displays giving information about their activity. Members of each group will be on hand to answer questions.
